3 Safety Essentials for College

Let’s admit it; going off to college is fun and so is shopping for it. You get to browse some discount store looking for things that will make your dorm room feel as homey as possible, and it’s pretty exciting! Even though you’re looking for things for your dorm room, it’s kind of like looking for things for your very first apartment. You’re going to need some kitchen and bathroom supplies too, right? Right.

But there is also another area of living in the dorms that students tend to skip over: safety equipment. Here are a few things you need to have on hand for dorm room living.

1.) A dorm safe. A dorm safe is absolutely essential. If you want to keep your private things private, you’re going to need a safe place to put them, and underneath your mattress is a rookie mistake. From personal experience, I’d recommend everyone have a dorm safe for college life. After all, you never know when you’re going to throw a party, have a bunch of randoms (friends of friends that you don’t know) show up and all of a sudden you’ve got strangers in your home. Plus if there’s a fire, a flood, or any other disaster, a safe will keep your valuable documents from getting ruined. Get a dorm safe, but your valuables in it, lock it up and rest easy tonight.

2.) Pepper spray. Hopefully you’ll never need to use it, but in case you do, pepper spray is one of the best self-defense items out there. Thankfully, pepper spray now comes in all kinds of disguised containers that won’t make it so obvious that you’re packing. This lipstick pepper spray, for example, looks completely innocent in your purse (or in your hand). Of course there’s nothing wrong with a giant, two-gallon can of mace, it just might come across as a little threatening.

3.) Locks. Not only for your doors, but also for your things. A good lock will ensure that you won’t come home to find your diary on display because your nosy roommate was wondering if you hid the Cheez-It’s in the bottom drawer of your dresser. And yes, you’ll want to keep a diary in college. Looking back to see the kind of stuff you used to worry about definitely makes for an amusing read later on in life.

So here you go, the top three safety items you need for college if you’re planning on having a safe college experience. For more college safety essentials, don’t forget to check out our store at www.secureoncampus.com.
